The alkyls building shall be an open structure with fire separation walls between the cylinder area,
day tank area and pumps. The design should have overhanging roofs to prevent rain water from
entering the building, especially the area where cylinders are unloaded. Local start/stop buttons,
hand switches and valve controls shall be located outside the building.
The alkyls building shall be equipped with a fire detection system (UV/IR) in each bay, which
alarms to a continuously attended area. Hand portable type C or D dry powder fire extinguishers
and one 70 kg (150 lb) wheeled dry powder unit shall be provided.
Where the alkyls line to the process area is buried, it shall be all welded and placed in a clearly
identified sand filled concrete trench. The line shall follow the most direct route to the user.
Alternately, where the line is installed above ground it shall be clearly identified, adequately
supported and protected with steel angle-iron for the whole of its length.
